Emergency Forklift Repairs Sydney: What to Do When Your Equipment Fails on Site
The forklift stops mid-lift, and everything behind it stops too. The truck at the dock keeps waiting. The pallets stay exactly where they are. Before long, someone asks how long this is going to take, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on what happens in the next ten minutes.
Aussie Forklifts has been getting Sydney operators back up and running since 1997, alongside forklift sales, hire and servicing. Here’s the process for getting a forklift back to work as quickly as possible, along with the steps that often get missed.
Shut it down before you even think about getting into diagnosis
Safety comes before troubleshooting, every time. Lower the forks to the floor, engage the parking brake, switch off the ignition and take the key with you. Then mark off or barrier the machine so no one drives a pallet jack into it by accident.
Resist the urge to fix it yourself. Under NSW work health and safety legislation, the responsibility for keeping equipment in safe working condition sits with the business that uses it, and forklift maintenance is one of the areas SafeWork NSW inspects. A half-finished diagnosis of a hydraulic fault is exactly the kind of thing that turns into an expensive mistake.
Make sure you have all this before you call
Two minutes of preparation can be the difference between a technician arriving with the right part already on the van, and one arriving to write a list. Before you call, have the following ready:
- The make, model and serial number from the compliance plate.
- A plain description of what the machine was doing when it failed.
- Any warning lights or error codes on the display.
- The fuel source – LPG, diesel, petrol, electric or natural gas.
- The site address, access point, and who the technician should ask for on arrival.
What then when the van arrives?
We run 15 mobile service vans, 24 hours a day, seven days a week – which is the part that matters most at 4am on a Sunday. The technician diagnoses the problem on-site and, in most cases, fixes it there too: hydraulics, brakes, transmissions, batteries and chargers, on-site tyre changes, safety checks and more. If a part needs replacing, we source it and fit it ourselves, rather than pointing you toward a supplier and leaving you to sort it out.
Not everything can be done on a loading dock, though. Engine and transmission overhauls go back to our workshop at Kings Park, where the machine is fully stripped down and the job is done properly the first time. Either way, you get a report along with a recommended servicing interval, so the same fault doesn’t catch you out again. You’ll find the brands we commonly service on our mobile forklift servicing and repairs page.
The signs you probably should have called about last week
Most emergency callouts had warning signs days beforehand. Reduced lifting capacity, or loads that won’t sit level. A battery that charges slowly and runs flat before the shift ends. Steering that’s stiff, slow or inconsistent. Leaks, overheating, visible wear. Strange noises or warning lights that never made it into the log book.
The longer any of this gets ignored, the worse – and more expensive – it becomes. Exactly how much worse depends on how long the fault has been running, the age of the forklift, the parts involved, and whether it’s mechanical, electrical or battery-related. Emergency repairs cost more than scheduled maintenance in every case. Our guide to forklift repair prices and symptoms covers this in more detail.

Frequently asked questions
Nothing broken right now? It’s still worth calling to set up a maintenance schedule – we’ll build it around your quiet periods, not ours. We service the Sydney metro area, the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Newcastle/Hunter and the Central Coast (see forklift repairs and servicing on the Central Coast).
Response time depends on the time of day, traffic and current call volume, so we don’t quote a fixed window. What we can tell you is that the mobile fleet runs 15 vans, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and after-hours calls are taken on 0417 691 960.
Most repairs happen on site. The mobile vans carry the parts and tools needed to sort hydraulic, brake, battery, tyre and electrical faults in your own yard. The exception is engine and transmission overhauls, which come back to the Aussie Forklifts workshop at Kings Park.
No. A warning light or an active fault means the machine should be taken out of service until a qualified technician has assessed it. Continuing to use it risks making the damage worse, creates a hazard for the driver and anyone working nearby, and puts the business offside with its work health and safety obligations.
Aussie Forklifts services all major makes, including Toyota, Crown, Hyster, Yale, Linde, Raymond, TCM, Komatsu, Nissan and Manitou, as well as the Larsa range it distributes in Australia. LPG, diesel, petrol, electric and natural gas machines are all covered, along with earthmoving equipment, golf carts and utility vehicles.
